How to catch mosquitoes

The mosquito reproduction cycle is now known: egg, pupa, larva and adult. However, it is possible to identify phases that can be very useful to us during the adult life phase of the mosquito.

Only female mosquitoes bite. Once fertilized, these need the proteins contained in the blood of the victims to complete the development of the eggs. Once matured, the mother mosquito goes in search of an ideal place with stagnant water where to lay the eggs which will continue in their development cycle.

So the mosquito can be captured during these two phases: when it is looking for blood and when it is looking for an oviposition.

The mosquito is looking for a victim

At this moment the mosquito is looking for a prey to consume its blood meal. For this purpose she looks for emissions of carbon dioxide and other substances usually emitted by mammals including humans. To capture mosquitoes in this phase, the Mosquito Magnet mosquito traps are optimal.

These in fact, through the emission of carbon dioxide and special synergistic substances simulate the presence of a large mammal or a group of human beings.

Mosquitoes approach and are sucked in and trapped forever.

The mosquitoes that have to lay their eggs

At this stage the mosquitoes have already stung, have matured the eggs and are ready to lay them. Due to their biology, mosquito eggs must be laid in stagnant water. Without water they will never finish their development cycle. At this moment the mother mosquito's instinct leads her to look for a collection of stagnant water and no longer a source of blood.

It is with the aim of catching mosquitoes at this stage that the BG-GAT mosquito trap was created. Thanks to the special conformation, it is sufficient to add water to create a highly attractive stagnation for the mosquito. Once the insect enters the trap, as well as being unable to deposit its eggs from the special mosquito net, it is captured by a simple glue sheet.

The mosquitoes that have to lay their eggs are much less than those looking for a blood meal, so it is normal that the catches in this case are less than those of carbon dioxide emission traps.

There are of course two aspects to consider:

It is good to start early in the fight. Just one mosquito in March can potentially give birth to millions of mosquitoes in July. For this reason, prevention with this kind of traps must start from the first heat.

Other ponds, natural or artificial, can be used by mosquitoes at any time. For this reason it is important to reduce or manage all of these outbreaks in order to minimize reproduction.
